Kitchen Utensil Drawings & Kitchen Drawer Organization

Organize your kitchen drawers and keep them organized with vinyl kitchen utensil drawings.

This month’s Silhouette Creator’s Challenge is organization. When I heard that I knew immediately I wanted to use it to finally get our kitchen drawers organized.

For something that I use multiple times each day, it is sad it took me so long to get around to organizing them.

Last month we worked hard every day to get a fourth bedroom built in the basement for our daughter. Now both kids have bedrooms downstairs together and they love it!

Since I didn’t have time to organize in January like I usually do, this month I have been doing my obligatory new year organization. I’ve tackled the board games, hall closet, all three bathrooms, and now the kitchen!

Sadly I have been meaning to organize our kitchen drawers since we got our new kitchen island about 2 years ago.

Better late then never, right? And to make sure they stay organized, I added some kitchen utensil drawings from vinyl. There are no more excuses for putting things away wrong!

There are many ways to organize your kitchen drawers. I have tried to use store bought drawer organizers, but they never fit right.

Maybe it’s the “I can make that” attitude, but I always want something customized to work perfectly in my space.

So I decided to make these simple drawer organizers that would be totally custom to my drawer.

After I got the drawers beautifully organized though, it was time to take it to the next level!

What good is spending time to organize it if the first time the kids clean out the dishwasher they mess it all up?

And I am not about to let the kids out of helping house work just because I am a bit obsessive.

So I decided to solve the problem by labeling each little compartment with these hand-drawn kitchen utensil drawings. Aren’t they so cute?

Even though my daughter cannot read, she can still help out in the kitchen. The vinyl kitchen utensil decals will even ensure my husband puts things away properly when he does the dishes too.

My only question is, would it be too excessive to do this to every drawer and cupboard in the kitchen? I’m kidding… mostly.

So if you are ready to get super organized this month, read below for the kitchen drawer organization tutorial with the kitchen utensil drawings. And then don’t forget to check out these other amazing ways to organize with you Silhouette!

How to Make a Kitchen Drawer Organizer

Supplies:

  • 1/4″ plywood
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw
    • I used my table saw to cut down the plywood. If you do not have a table saw, you can also use a circular saw to cut the plywood into strips the height of your drawers. And the Kreg Rip Cut is my favorite circular saw accessory for making quick, straight cuts.
  • Wood glue
  • Blue painter’s tape

Start with a super messy drawer.

The first step is to figure out your layout. This was probably the hardest step because it was like a puzzle.

Group all your utensils together by what will be in each compartment. Then figure out your puzzle of where everything will go.

Cut strips of the plywood to the height of your drawer (or a little shorter depending on what you prefer).

Now cut those strips to the length needed to go between all your utensils. I started with the pieces that were the full length of the drawer, put them in place then measured between them for an accurate measurement for the next pieces.

Dry fit it in the drawer and make any adjustments needed.

Then it is time to glue it together. Put a bit of wood glue on the ends of the plywood and hold them in place with the blue painters tape.

I did not glue the plywood to my drawer, just to the rest of the drawer divider.

Then you can easily remove it if necessary for cleaning or to change things up in the future.

After the glue has dried, remove the painters tape. Now it’s time for the labels.

Supplies:

  • Kitchen utensil drawings cut file
    • I am sharing the cut files for the hand-drawn utensils in my subscriber library. Click here to subscribe to my weekly newsletter and gain access to all the freebies. If you already have your password, click here to download them.
  • Silhouette Cameo
  • Black vinyl
    • I used Oracle 651 which is a more permanent vinyl. I am sure it will get beat up a lot under the utensils in my kitchen drawer so I want it to be able to hold up to lots of use.
  • Transfer paper

Measure each compartment to see what size you need to make the utensil decals. Size and arrange them on your workspace in Silhouette Design Studio.

Cut out using the vinyl setting and weed out the excess vinyl.

Make sure the bottom of your drawer is clean. I used a microfiber cloth to wipe it out.

Use the transfer paper to transfer the vinyl decals to the bottom of each compartment.

Remove the transfer tape and presto! Beautifully organized kitchen drawers, that will stay that way!!!

Now you can load the drawer back up with all your utensils. Please tell me I am not the only one who is totally giddy about this organized drawer?

And seeing it all organized with those cute kitchen utensil drawings in the bottom makes me eager to do this to the rest of the drawers in our kitchen island!

They need it really bad too. Yikes! Looks like I need to make lots more kitchen utensil drawings.
