14 Days of Popcorn: Chocolate Kettle Corn
Since today is only Feb 2, and most people might still be going strong on their New Year’s resolution to eat healthy, I decided to share a healthier sweet popcorn treat next. I am never good at eating healthy unless it includes chocolate!
I’ve learned if I try to eliminate chocolate I will just end up guilt eating it while hiding from my kids in the pantry. Aside from coffee, chocolate is my happy place when the kids aren’t listening and I’m having “one of those days”.
So I made this chocolate kettle corn to give me a slightly sweet and chocolatey snack but still be a little healthy.
I am a huge fan of kettle corn. The slightly sweet shell created on the outside of the hot corn is delicious. And since this kettle corn is made with just a little bit of sugar (especially when compared to caramel popcorn), I turn to it when I want a sweet treat but don’t want to kill my diet.
Ok, diet may be a strong word, because I eat something sweet every day. But if I need a second something sweet… this is a good place to start!
I was trying a couple new kettle corn recipes and they both failed miserably! One just burned and congealed in the pan and not one kernel popped! The other I got about 25% of the kernels to pop before YUCK happened.
I was not optimistic when I tried this third recipe, but luck was finally on my side and what happened was the perfect slightly sweet, chocolate kettle corn.
To make my kettle corn I use this Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper. If you do not have one, you can still make kettle corn. Our Best Bites has a great tutorial for how to make kettle corn on the stove with just a pot.
I’ve done it this way many times, but a couple years ago my parents gave us all the Whirley-Pops and we love it! If you are popcorn addicts like us, it’s a worthwhile investment 🙂

- 2 Tbsp coconut oil
- 1/3 cup popcorn kernels, unpopped
- 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 Tbsp semi-sweet chocolate chips
- salt (optional)
- In a small bowl, combine popcorn kernels and sugar. Set aside.
- In your kettle corn maker, or large pot with lid, melt coconut oil and heat just until it starts to smoke (this is very subtle, look closely so you do not burn your oil).
- Quickly add popcorn kernels/sugar to the pan, close the lid and start stirring, or shaking, to keep the kernels moving in the hot oil.
- You should start hearing kernels pop in a minute or two. Do not open lid to look or you could get shot with popping corn!
- Continue to stir, or shake, until popping stops. Remove from heat and shake for a minute more to ensure no more kernels will pop when you open the lid.
- Open the lid and add chocolate chips. Close the lid and stir to melt the chocolate onto the kettle corn. The chocolate will be heavier than the popcorn so stir, then shake upside down, then stir, then shake upside down, to ensure the chocolate is evenly distributed and not just melted to the bottom of your pan.
- Remove from your pan and salt to taste (optional).
